14-A Sunday, May 7, 1989 The Billing Gazette Infants' slayings trouble sheriff Elizabeth Fletcher Elizabeth Goodman Fletcher, 84, of 20 Sheri Lane, died Saturday in St Vincent Hospital of congestive heart failure. She enjoyed traveling, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. ALTON, ILL (AP) A sheriff investigating the three-year-old death of a baby whose parents reported her abducted said Saturday that the strangely similar slaying of another daughter gives him hope he'll make arrests. Jersey County Sheriff Frank Yocom, 50, said he still thinks daily about the June 1986 death of Loralei Marie Sims, which left him angry and upset. "It's worn on me," Yocom said.

"I've maintained throughout my investigation that I would never close the case as long as I was involved in law enforcement in Jersey County, make arrests and put this thing to rest," he said. "And that's still my goaL" The parents, Robert and Paula Sims, are the chief suspects in the latest case, the death of their 6-week-old daughter Heather Lee, and authorities expect to make an arrest soon, police Sgt. Rick McCain said Friday in this city of 40,000 people along the Mississippi River near St Louis. McCain said Saturday that neither parent is considered the stronger suspect The Simses deny any wrongdoing, and hope police will investigate "with an open mind so the killer will be caught," said their attorney, Donald Groshong of Alton. The parents have refused to talk to reporters.

The state Department of Children and Family Services on Friday took custody of their 15-month-old son, Randy, and the parents are staying with relatives. -Their home in a middle-income, tree-lined neighborhood remains an object of curiosity. Broken glass, remnants from Thursday night when authorities broke a window to get inside the house, is still scattered on the front porch, and the grass stands about a foot high. A sign on the front door reads: "In case of fire, save our dogs. We have dogs." Officials investigating Heather's death have examined Jersey County records, and have been working closely with Yocom, the sheriff said by telephone from his office in Jerseyville.

When authorities interviewed Robert Sims, 37, on Thursday night, Yocom sat in. Sims "made some comments that could be very helpful down the road," the sheriff said. In June 1986, the parents, who then lived in nearby Brighton in Jersey County, reported that an armed intruder barged into their home while Sims was at work and took LoraleL their 13-day-old firstborn. Remains believed to be Loralei's were found a week later near the couple's former home. The parents were suspects, but no one was charged.

On April 29, the Simses told police that a masked gunman knocked out Mrs. Sims, 30, and abducted Heather. MM I LOCAL DEATHS Elizabeth Goodman Fletcher, 84, 20 Sherl Lane Burl Jamison, 80, 2032 Ave.C. Esther S. Stein, 2115 Central Ave.

i Mexican police kill cult leader BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) -The ringleader of a drug-smuggling cult that killed 15 people was slain in a gunbattle with Mexico City police Saturday, and his girlfriend, the alleged "high priestess," was captured, police said. Cameron County sheriff's Lt. George Gavito said Mexican authorities told U.S. investigators Saturday night that cult leader Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo, 26, was killed and that police have arrested Sara Aldrete, a 24-year-old former Texas college student described as the "witch" of the cult. "They have confirmed that Adolfo is dead and Sara has been arrested," Gavito said.

Alleged cult member Martin Quin-tana Rodriguez also was killed in the shootout at a Mexico City residence about 4:30 p.m., said Cameron County Sheriff Alex Perez. Three other people believed to be cult members were also arrested. Constanzo, the alleged "godfather," and Aldrete had been sought in an international manhunt and are believed to have masterminded the activities of the cult that killed 15 people in a series of ritualistic sacrifices and drug-related slayings. Gavito said he spoke on the telephone with Ms. Aldrete, who is in police custody in Mexico City, for about five minutes Saturday night, but he would not divulge details of the conversation.

Mexico City police confirmed that two people were killed during a shootout Saturday afternoon and that their identity was in question. They also said the shootout occurred in a supermarket. The attorney general's office in Mexico's Federal District would not immediately confirm the story. "We don't know anything about it," Luis Gomez Saenz told The Associated Press by telephone Saturday night Constanzo, 26, and Ms. Aldrete, 24, had been charged with aggravated kidnapping by Cameron County authorities and are believed to have directed human sacrifices, mutilations and the boiling of brains and other organs in rituals to bring occult protection for their drug-smuggling ring.

The ring and its macabre activities was discovered when authorities unearthed 15 bodies buried west of the border city of Matamoros, Mexico, beginning on April 11. Constanzo and Ms. Aldrete, missing since the first 12 bodies were uncovered April 11, are among 11 people indicted in the United States on a four-count drug indictment Four of the five men in custody in Matamoros said the cult leaders were Constanzo and Ms. Aldrete. The pair flew from McAllen to Mexico City on April 11, officials have said.

In the Mexican capitaL the investigation led to searches of residences where occult altars were found. Atlantis crew pursues light work schedule CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) Atlantis' astronauts soared past the halfway mark of their four-day space journey Saturday, continuing a light schedule of experiments as the probe they deployed soared beyond the moon toward Venus. The workload aboard Atlantis was limited because the Magellan probe and its rocket booster, which together weighed 45,000 pounds, did not allow for many experiments to be carried aboard.
