Herbert Newmann Announcements -i atjr fJUUligS (SaZrttr Wednesday, July 9, 1969 Evening Edition 6 Librarian Says Cuts Will Hurt Weather Miss Hake said Montana libraries would get only small amounts of the federal money because the State Library in Helena would receive most of the federal money given to Montana. Mrs. R. D. Warden, chairman of the board of the Great Falls Public Library and legislative chairman of the Montana Library Association, said recently that "Montana library programs will be shattered by the lack of funding" unless the federal cuts are rescinded.

MRS. WARDEN left for Washington Sunday to protest the proposed federal library cuts. In recent years, federal funds have supplied 10 per cent of the total money spent by state and local governments on libraries. With the new cuts, the federal money will amount to less than five per cent. The Bureau of the Budget recommended the cuts in the interests of curbing inflation.

Miss Hake said, It's lucky we got the construction done under the wire before the cuts came." She said that if federal funds had been axed earlier, the Billings Library would not have been able to move from Montana Avenue to its new location on North Broadway. The proposal calls for cutting library development funds in half and eliminating matching funds for building and services for the blind. AID TO bookmobile services and inter-library book loans would also be curtailed.
