Ziegler passed away from cancer at his home on Saturday, Feb. 13, 1993. Born on July 20, 1923, in Dartford, the son of Ernest and Irene Ziegler, he graduated from John Rogers High School in Spokane, in 1941. Mr. Ziegler entered the military in February of 1943, and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant with the 542nd Airborne in May of 1946.

On March 17, 1944, he married Viola Mae Roberts in Wilmington, N.C. Following his MR. ZIEGLER discharge, he and his father started the Ziegler and Son Building Supply in Spokane, later being i instrumental in the development the Francis Avenue Supply Retail Lumber Yard and Sawmill operation, also located in Spokane, Wash. In 1953, Mr. Ziegler opened the Ziegler Lumber Co.

in Billings which is today Zig's Building Materials, owned by his son, and operating at the same location. In addition to his retail operation, he founded the ThikN-Thin Wholesale Building Materials business in 1958. Mr. Ziegler's businesses operated in both North South Dakota, Idaho, Washington and numerous locations throughout Montana. The ranch he owned and operated on Pryor Creek is where Mr.

Ziegler has resided since 1961. Mr. Ziegler is survived by his wife, Viola; five sons, Gary Billings, Jack and his wife, Shelly of Bozeman, Jon and his wife, Lanceine of Rapid City, S.D., Ronald of Belle Fourche, S.D., and Mark and his wife, Valery of Missoula; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Sid ZieglerHarder of Billings; a brother, Vern of Spokane, two sisters, Geraldine Wells Shirley Moore, both of Spokane, 21 grandchildren; three great and numerous nieces and nephews. Ernie's passions in life were his family and his work. Those fortunate enough to know him well could easily define his philosophy of life.

He was a generous man who loved the great outdoors and was known for his sense of humor. He was a ray of sunshine and a helping hand to whoever crossed his path. He was a man of extraordinary strength and will be missed. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb.

'Joe' Soulsby Joseph E. "Joe" Soulsby, 89, of 1101 Clark Billings, formerly of Stanford, died Sunday at his home of natural causes. He was born Jan. 24, 1904, at Belt, a son to Edward Patterson and Mary Ann Landers Souls- by. The family moved to Bearcreek, where Joe was one of the first to graduate from Bearcreek High School.

He joined his brother, Les and their father in the family dray business and later engaged in the house moving MR. SOULSBY industry. He married Jean McNeil on July 3, 1925, and moved to Lehigh in the later '20s, the former coal mining town of which most of the buildings went to Stanford. Joe, Les and a younger brother Art played in a dance band. The Soulsbys then purchased the Lehigh townsite and started one of the most successful Hereford herds in the state.

Joe received the Record Stockman's of the year in Livestock Award in 1970, and Montana Hereford Man of the Year in 1985. He and his wife, Jean moved to Billings in 1973. Besides being a successful cattle breeder, Joe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Palestine Masonic Lodge No. 88 in Stanford. He was a member of the Great Falls Scottish Rite and the Algeria Shrine Temple in Helena and also a member of the Elks in Billings.

Joe was a great supporter and founder of the NILE show at Billings. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, basketball, hunting, riding fine quarter horses and enjoyed fishing. He had a bountiful garden and his residence was adorned with roses. Joe could 1 usually sport a joke or share a word of good cheer. He is survived by his wife, Jean; a sister, Violet (Ole) Johnson and a brother, Art Soulsby, both of Billings; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Les, a sister, Myrtle. Funeral and Masonic services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers Nordquist Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the Masonic Youth Services, Box 21297, Billings, Mont.

59104; or to charity of choice. Mabel Marie Elliott Mabel Marie Elliott, 104, of Laurel, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1993, at Deaconess Medical Center, Billings. She was a daughter of William Henry and Jessie Heck Harrison, born Feb. 24, 1888, at Diamond, one of seven children.

She married Elmer Hill on May 16, 1906, at Sycamore, Kan. The couple came to Montana 1907, and homesteaded near Molt. She married George C. Elliott in 1934, and the couple owned and operated the Madison River Lodge between Ennis and West Yellowstone until 1971, and then moved to Laurel, where she had resided since. Mrs.

Elliott was a great patron of the Laurel Senior Citizens and played in their band. She loved to sew and make quilts and other things. Survivors include one son, Forrest E. Hill of Laurel; one grandson, Errol Hill, of Las Vegas, three great-grandchildren, Vincent Hill of Laurel, Shawna Wilson of Laurel Sherol Roseliep of Kent, and one sister, Hazel Boyd of Laurel. Services will be held at 2 p.m.

The son of Frederick and Elizabeth Reihl, Fred was born on Jan. 8, 1911, in Waterbury, where he was raised. He graduated from Crosby High School and the University of Connecticut with a degree in mechanical engineering. He married Lucille Messer in September 1937, in Waterbury, where they lived until her death in December 1962. Fred was employed by Anaconda American Brass for more than 25 years, and went on to Somers Thin Strip until he retired in January 1976.

Fred married the former Aida Baker in June 1973. He lived in Zephyrhills, until December 1992, when he moved to Billings. Fred is survived by his wife, Aida of Zephyrhills, daughters, Martha Sheckleton and Olivia Sheckleton, both of Billings; sisters, Margaret Reihl McClure of Zephyrhills and Elizabeth Reihl Sturtevant of Branford, grandchildren, Eric and Prytania Sheckleton of Billings. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Cremation has taken place.

No services are planned at this time. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Maria Gisler BUFFALO, Wyo. Maria Gisl- er, 82, of Buffalo, died Saturday evening. Services will be held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Willow Grove Cemetery. Francis G. 'Fran' Walter Francis G.

"Fran" Walter, 71, of 5 S. Crestwood Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1993, at his home. Fran was born on March 24, 1921, in Poris, the eldest son of Herman and Anna Walter. He served in the Army A Air Corps in World War II as a crew chief for the testing of new B- 24 bombers.

His eyes were always drawn to any aircraft in the sky. Fran married Evelyn Kuntz on Nov. 22, 1947, in ForThe couple MR. WALTER syth. resided in Rosebud County until moving to Billings in 1954.

He became a respected member of the trucking community as a repair man, service manager and later as an insurance adjuster. He was a member of the Ashler Masonic Lodge and the Elks Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. He as an active member of the Elks Bowling League and was very fond of his involvement. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his sons, Rich Walter and Dan Reiland; three grandchildren, Cody Jesse Walter and Mariel Rieland and his brother, Carl E. Walter of Worden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1993, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Cremation will follow.

John L. Aggers, 67, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1993, in Sheridan County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Mass of the Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb.

18, from Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Gerda Irene Feezell GLASGOW Gerda Irene Feezell, 85, died Feb. 15, 1993, in the Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow of natural causes.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the First Methodist Church in Glasgow. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Gene Stahl CODY, Wyo. Robert G. Stahl passed away at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, after a very courageous battle with cancer.

Bob was born to Molly and Henry Stahl in Billings on Oct. 8, 1928. Bob completed high school in Billings and married Alice L. Lobdell on Dec. 5, 1948.

He worked for the Bureau of Land Reclamation and Shell Oil Co. in Billings prior to moving his family to Cody, in 1959. Bob went to work at Husky Oil Co. He retired from security at West Park Hospital in 1991, to attend to his hobbies of old cars, camping, fishing and his family. He is survived by his wife, Alice; four sons, Robert, Curt, Rennie and Glenn; a daughter, Maureen Shuler; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Dorothy Myers; and his stepmother, Emma Stahl.

He was a loving and devoted father and friend and his memory will be held forever in the hearts of those who knew him. Cremation will take place with no services planned. Calvin M. 'Cal' Stricherz Calvin M. "Cal" Stricherz, 69, of Billings, passed away Sunday, Feb.

14, 1993, at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center. He was born on Sept. 21, 1923, at Melham, S.D., the son of William and Maize Stricherz. He moved to Billings with his parents in 1932, and graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1941.

Cal was married to Lillian A. Berg on Feb. 7, 1942, in Billings. He worked at Elliott's Men's Store as a sales clerk before entering the Army Air Corps in January 1943, where he served in the European Theater of Operations. After he received his discharge in 1945, he returned to Billings and returned to Elliott's Men's Store.

Later on Cal managed Buttrey's Men's Store in Glasgow until 1948, when they moved back to Billings. Then he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. on the dock, and he also worked there for the BurlingtonNorthern Railroad for 35 years. He was promoted to dock foreman and later on retired in 1984. Surviving is his wife, Lillian; and two daughters, Mrs.

Tony (Sandra) Rowe of Omaha, and Mrs. James (Pam) Steinmetz of Sheridan, one son, Bill C. Stricherz of Cheyenne, two sisters, Aurelie Deibert of Waco, Texas, and Yvonne Stiedl of Golden, and three grandsons. No services are planned at his request. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Bertha Rowena van Swearingen GILLETTE, Wyo. Bertha Rowena van Swearingen, 78, passed away Feb. 13, 1993, at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette, following an extended illness.

Funeral services for Bertha van Swearingen will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 18, 1993, at 2 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Glendive, with Rev. David Poovey officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery in Glendive.

Bertha R. van Swearingen was born Dec. 19, 1914, in Glendive to Roe and Jessie (Baker) Fuller. She graduated from Glendive High School and later. received her teaching certificate from the Billings, Montana Normal School.

She taught at rural schools in married "Shorty" Hansen. Dawson until 1942, when she County, They farmed in the Bloomfield area until "Shorty's" death in 1965. In 1972, she married Hugh van Swearingen, and they made the home in Miles City and later Laurel. Bertha moved to Gillette, after Hugh passed away in 1985, to be near her family. She enjoyed daily dinners and playing cards with her friends at the Senior Citizens Center in Gillette, Wyo.

Due to illness, she has resided at Pioneer Manor since 1991. Bertha is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Dave Hansen of Gillette, two granddaughters, Sandra Fox and Heather Hansen, both of Gillette, and two nieces. She is preceded in death by her husbands; two brothers, Jack and Elwin Fuller; two sisters, Nelly Strunk and Edith Morris; and one daughter, Jean Haines. Persons wishing to pay respects may do so on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1993, from 2 to 7 p.m.

at the Noecker Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette, who is in charge of local arrangements. Katherine S. Lautt HARDIN Katherine S. Lautt, 81, devoted housewife and mother, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1993, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home, following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 28, 1911, in Scottsbluff, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Sinner. She moved with her parents to the Garryowen area in 1939, and grew up and attended area schools.

Katherine married Ben Lautt in Hardin on Nov. 14, 1940, the couple made their home in Hardin. Mr. Lautt died in 1986. She worked at the Holly Sugar Factory for several campaigns and later worked for the Hardin Bakery and Club Cafe.

She enjoyed camping, crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was a member of the German Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons, Roddney and his wife, Nora of Billings and Vernon and his wife, Coletta of Libby; four grandchildren, Annette Lawrence of Toronto, Canada, Kristine Anderson of Billings, Rhonda Bothman of Libby and Rodney Lautt of Spokane, Wash. and four greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin entrusted with the arrangements. John J. Christman BRIDGER John J. Christman, 77, of Bridger, died Sunday evening, Feb.

14, 1993, in the Carbon County Memorial Nursing Home in Red Lodge. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the veterans section of the Bridger Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the V.F.W.

Jim Bridger Post No. 1543. The Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements. Doris Armstrong LAUREL Doris Armstrong, 75, of Laurel, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1993.

She was born Aug. 3, 1917, at Columbus, the daughter of John C. and Amelia Smallwood. Doris' early years were spent on the Shane Ranch. She shared many golden memories of this time with her family.

In her teens she played basketball for Columbus High School and was considered an outstanding guard; very quick on her feet! In the words of a former opponent, "she lived life like she played ball." Doris married Louis W. Armstrong on May 16, 1936, in Roundup. Doris devoted her life to her family while maintaining an active role in the community and her church. She was a member of Laurel Rotana, St. Margaret's Council, Jolly Neighbors Extension Club, and the Rebekah Lodge, where she received the Order of the Patriarch Militant Auxiliary.

She also held the title of Nobel Grand and other offices of the Rebekah Lodge. Doris was the driving force behind the Thompson Park Shelter. She was very proud of it and received "Woman of the Year" and a Community Service award from the Laurel Jaycees. Our mom and wife gave her "all" to us, yet she managed to have more to share with others. She gathered many friends along her path through life and will leave a large void in our hearts.

She was known as "Aunt Dodie" to many nieces and nephews who found a warm hug every time they met. She loved children and always had room for one more. She was affectionately called "Chicken Granny" by her 25 grandchildren and 17 greatDoris is survived by her husband, Lou; eight children, Peggy Leyden of Laurel, Richard and Joyce Armstrong of Helena, Bill and Jan Armstrong of Libby, Jim and MaryEllen Armstrong of Great Falls, John and Joan Armstrong of Phoenix, Vicky and Ron Stricker of Laurel, Cindy and Lon Bekel of Laurel and Jackie and Fred Borresen of Phoenix, Ariz. She is also survived by two brothers, C.W. "Burt" Smallwood of Helena and Kenneth K.

Smallwood of Kilmarnock, Va. Doris was preceded in death by two sons, Lance and Mike Armstrong, and her sister, Marjorie Jensen. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at St.

Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel. Memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Laurel.

Interment of cremated remains will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Church of Community Hope. Smith-Cashmore Memorial Chapel, Laurel was in charge of cremation.

Clarence Anderson SIDNEY Clarence Anderson, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 14, in the Richland Homes in Sidney. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Richland Homes Chapel with burial in Sidney Cemetery.

Tribal chairman off to Moscow PABLO (AP) Chairman Mickey Pablo of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes will travel to Moscow in May for a conference on solving the disputes between indigenous peoples and other nations. It is sponsored by the Congress of Nations and States, which grew out of a desire by the Russian government to address issues arising from nations within nations. Through the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations, the conference proposal has been broadened to include the governments of the United States, Germany and Japan, along with a variety of native-people nations from around the world.
